Primary Agriculture
The primary agriculture sector is one of the critical sectors contributing to Zambia’s economic development, mostly to non-traditional exports (NTEs). In the past few years, the agriculture sector has recorded tremendous growth both in terms of national production as well as export earnings especially in the major export products which include tobacco, cotton and coffee. Other products in the sector include maize, rice, sorghum, millet, beans, groundnuts, seed and wheat. The seed sector has also become increasingly important not only in Zambia but also within the region.
Major investments have recently taken place in this sector, especially the tobacco and cotton sub-sectors that have been receiving new entrants in the past few years. In general, the agricultural sector has continued to perform exceedingly well as evidenced by increased production.
