Economic importance – Zambia’s agricultural sector is the key to the development of the Zambian economy and is the engine of growth for the next decade and beyond. Agriculture generates about 22% of GDP and provides livelihood for more than 50% of the population.

Structure – Zambia covers 75 million hectares (752,000 km2), out of which 58 percent (42 million hectares) is classified as medium-to high-potential for agriculture production. The Zambian agriculture sector comprises crops, livestock, and fisheries.  There are three broad categories of farmers:  small-scale, medium, and large-scale.

Extensive sectorial linkages – The sector has extensive backward and lateral linkages with the manufacturing and services sectors, as well as forward linkages to manufacturing through the supply of raw materials to various processing industries.
