Zambia set to become one of Africa’s largest producers of silk

The Permits and Certificates Approvals (LPCA) Committee of the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) accompanied by management, visited Mupika Sericulture Plant one of the companies operating under the Wonderful Group of Companies in Mpika Muchinga Province.

The team visited the company last week on a familiarization tour to appreciate progress of the silk project and its impact on the economy in terms of actualised investments, employment creation and opportunities for other businesses such as small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and challenges.

The project manager Captain Chewe Mulenga revealed that Mupika Sericulture Plant is set to become one of Africa’s largest producers of silk following the establishment of the US$31 million project.

Captain Mulenga stated that once complete, the company projects to employ over 5,000 people directly and through it’s out grower schemes.

And speaking during the tour of the plant, LPCA Committee chairperson Musokotwane Sichizuwe who is also Director Industry at the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry said Government is ready to support the investment to ensure that it operates efficiently.
