CASE FOR IMPACT ON DEVELOPMENT

Following the various interventions undertaken towards the promotion and facilitation of investment, trade and business development, a number of success stories were recorded across sectors regarding investment actualisation levels, employment creation, export turnover, expansion and Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG).

1. POWERFUL DILIGENT VERACIOUS (PDV) METALS LIMITED

Powerful Diligent Veracious (PDV) Metals Limited is a Joint Venture between a Zambian-owned company called Nicho Investment Ltd and a Chinese-owned enterprise called PDV International (HK) Ltd. The company was registered in 2023 with ZDA and is located in LS-MFEZ. The Company is vertically integrated with mining and processing of iron ore to finished products and initially committed to invest USD 70.6 million and create 488 jobs.

PDV Metals was commissioned on the 7th of November, 2024 by the Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema. The project commenced operations within 11 months of its registration with the Agency, and has since actualised USD 130 million, almost double the committed investment and created 300 jobs.

2. YASH LIFE SCIENCES

The expansion project was completed and commissioned in 2024 with an investment value of USD 45 million and has created 600 jobs. With the expansion, the company has increased its monthly production capacity to manufacture 160 million tablets, 200 million capsules and 2.4 million bottles of dry powders.

3. CHINA NON-FERROUS MINING CORPORATION (CNMC) - 28 SHAFT

CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines is a joint venture between the governments of the Republic of Zambia and China Non-Ferrous Mining Corporation (CNMC). Located in Luanshya town, the company owns 28 Shaft which was brought to life in 2024 after 20 years of inactivity with committed investment USD 1.5 billion of which USD 500 million towards dewatering the shaft to pave way for development of the mine. The mine will employ 3,000 employees and produce about 1.2 million tons of copper during its lifespan.

The dewatering exercise to pump out water from the shaft commenced in 2024 and was launched by the Republican President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.

4. MAAMBA ENERGY LIMITED

Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) is one of Zambia’s largest Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and operates Zambia’s largest thermal power plant in Maamba, Sinazongwe district.

MEL is a subsidiary of Nava Bharat (Singapore) limited which holds a majority equity stake. The balance equity is held by ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc. of the Government of the Republic of Zambia undertaking.

In 2024, MEL broke ground for the construction of a 300 megawatts (MW) Phase II thermal power which doubled power output from the company to 600MW. The project will involve the construction of two 150MW thermal power plants a total cost of USD 450 million. The project will create 433 jobs and is set for completion in July 2026, 24 months after commencement.

5. BIBAGRY LIMITED

Bibagry Limited is located in Kitwe, Copperbelt Province and manufactures non-alcoholic beverages. The company actualised USUSD 27 million by 2024 from the committed investment of USD 30 million in 2021, in a period of 2 years and have employed 125 Zambians from the 114 committed jobs.

The company is currently exporting to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tanzania, and Botswana in addition to supplying the local market. Bibagry Limited also undertakes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the local community such as provision of water to Kamfinsa Correctional Facility and surrounding community.
